How To Spot A Hazardous Tree

Determining whether your tree is hazardous or not can be a challenging task. Here are some of the key signs to look for when deciding if a tree is hazardous. Common signs of a potentially hazardous tree include; weakness, leaning, missing bark, cavities, dead or hanging branches, fungal growth and root issues.

Let's break down each sign for Structural Issues

Cracks and Cavities: Large cracks and or cavities in the trunk and or branches can show signs of structural weakness. This makes the tree more susceptible to collapse or breakage.

Leaning and Tilting: If a tree has a significant lean or tilt, it may mean that the tree is unstable and can easily fall. Especially during a storm or strong winds.

Loose bark or Missing bark: When bark is loose and or missing on the tree, it can show us that the tree may be in a weakened state and has the potential to split or fall.

Multiple Trunks: If a tree has multiple trunks, it can potentially be in a weakened state which can lead to splitting or falling.

Signs of Disease and or Decay

Dead and or Hanging Branches: Dead branches, especially the ones that are hanging can fall unexpectedly and create safety hazards for your property and neighbourhood.

Fungal Growth: When fungal growth happens on the roots or trunk of the tree, it can indicate signs of decay which can create structural weakness within the tree. Making it more prone to failure.

Root Issues: If the tree has visible signs of root damage and or disease it can cause the tree to be unstable. Root problems can cause the tree to tilt or lean due to weakness.

Insect Infestation: If the tree has an infestation, that can weaken the tree and make it more prone to disease, decay and falling.

Bare patches and or Wilting: Trees with bare patches and or wilting leaves can happen if the tree is under stress or is diseased. This can lead to safety hazards due to the tree being structurally weakened.

Abnormal leaf colour, Shape and or Size: A tree with abnormal leaf colour, shape and sizes can indicate that the tree is under stress or is diseased.

Other Hazardous signs;

Branches on power lines: Branches on or hanging on power lines can cause fires or power outages which create serious safety hazards.

Sawdust piles or Crumbling wood: Sawdust piles or crumbling wood at the base of the tree or stump can indicate signs of decay such as infestation or internal rot.

These are all signs homeowners with trees should be aware of. If you notice any of these signs on your trees, it is important to get in contact with trained Arborists. A hazardous tree poses risk to your property and neighbourhood.
