As winter temperatures approach, this brings frost, wind, heavy snow and harsh conditions that will challenge your tree. These conditions can cause serious issues if your trees are left unchecked. Preparing your trees for winter helps to protect your landscape’s beauty but also prevents costly repairs.
Why Winter Tree Preparation Matters
Cold weather can also stress the established and matured trees. Strong winds have the ability to uproot weakened trees, ice and snow can break heavy limbs and frost cracks bark. Taking preventive action in late fall gives your trees a better chance at staying healthy, strong and resilient during winter’s toughest storms.
TreeArb’s Winter Tree Protection Checklist
Be sure to follow these helpful expert arborist tips to better protect your trees during winter;
Inspect for Structural Weakness
Check for cracks, leaning trunks or dead branches which may not be able to withstand snow or ice. By scheduling an inspection, we can help identify hidden or unseen risks before they become major and unsafe problems.
Prune During Dormancy
The time between late fall and early winter is an ideal time for pruning. This will reduce sap loss, deter many pests, and will give our arborists a clearer view of the tree’s structure. Pruning now will help to encourage healthy regrowth during spring time.
Mulch to Insulate Roots
Spread 2-4 inches of organic mulch evenly around the base of the tree. Do not let the mulch touch the trunk of the tree as this can cause rotting. Mulch helps to stabilize the soil’s temperature and preserves moisture through the cold spells.
Protect Young or Sensitive Trees From Frost
Wrap trunks with frost blankets or burlap on the vulnerable species. These act as barriers to prevent frost cracks and help to protect the tree’s bark from temperature fluctuations.
Water Before The Ground Freezes
Hydrating roots make the tree less prone to winter injuries. Giving your tree a deep watering before the first freeze/frost to strengthen their resistance.
Add Cabling or Bracing if Needed
Trees with large and heavy canopies or large trees may need extra support to better handle the snow and ice buildup. At TreeArb, our Arborists can safely install cabling to prevent breakage on your trees.
