Summer Tree Care: Watering, Mulching and Heat Protection

Summer is a critical season for your tree's health. High temperatures and dry conditions can stress even the hardiest species. To keep your trees healthy and resilient, here are some of our top tips for your summer care.

We are going to focus on three tips to keep your trees thriving; watering, mulching and heat protection.

Watering

Water is an essential key to maintaining your trees' health during summer. Focus on proper techniques which will promote deep root growth and full water absorption.

  • Deep and Infrequent watering: Instead of watering daily, try less frequent but watering deeper. This will encourage the tree’s roots to grow deeper which allows them to access ground water more efficiently. This will improve drought tolerance.

  • Early Morning and or Late Evening: Water in the early morning or late evening to minimize water evaporation. Allow the soil to fully absorb the water before the peak heat hits during the day.

  • Slow Drip Irrigation: Use a slow drip irrigation system or even a slow flow hose for more efficient watering.

Mulching

Mulching will play a vital role in protecting your trees this summer. Mulch will help conserve water and regulate soil temperature which will reduce summer stress.

  • Mulch Benefits: Adding mulch around the base of your tree helps to retain soil moisture, helps to regulate soil temperature and even reduces weeds. All these benefits will create a healthier root environment.

  • Mulch Application: Spread the mulch evenly around the tree’s base, roughly, 2-4 inches thick. Avoid piling it against the tree’s trunk to prevent your tree from rot and fungal problems.

  • Type of Mulch: Try using organic mulch such as; bark, shredded leaves or wood chips. These types of mulch will break down over time which will improve soil structure and nutrients.

Heat Protection

Summer heat can damage sensitive or young trees.  Give these tips a try to provide added protection to your trees.

  • Create Shade: Shade cloth can reduce sun exposure and lower temperatures for your vulnerable and younger trees.

  • Pruning: Summer pruning can improve air circulation, minimize canopy density and reduce heat stress which will promote overall tree health. Avoid over pruning of your trees during peak heat.

  • Avoid Heat Stressesor: Avoid using nitrogen fertilizers in summer as this can cause more heat stress.

By focusing on watering, mulching and heat protection, you can keep your trees vibrant and strong throughout summer. For more expert advice on summer care, please don’t hesitate to contact us today!
